Description: This is a matted lithograph from 'The Circus', a portfolio/collection of 39 offset lithographs of artwork by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. 'The Circus' was published for the Paris Book Center Inc. of NY, under the direction of Andres Sauret at the presses of Fernand Mourlot in Paris. In other words, this is a limited edition print, a part of 39 reproductions of color crayon drawings by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a phenomenal French artist, who made some incredible accomplishments during his short lifetime of 36 years. His artwork was heavily influenced by the culture and times of 19th century Paris, specifically modern print-making and Cabarets, which all began in the Montmarte district. During this time, Henri Toulouse-Lautrec lived in the heart of Montmarte. He loved the extravagance of the entertainment in the cabarets, and would spend a lot of time there. Of all of the cabarets, Moulin Rouge (est. 1889) was his favorite, and he would often be there, sipping on a glass of absinthe. Upon its opening, he was commissioned to make posters, advertising the Moulin Rouge & Cabaret. He went on to make many, many posters promoting entertainers and performers in the cabarets during this time. Much of his original artwork is in collections owned by some of the largest and finest art museums in the world, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NY) and the Louvre (Paris).
