He studied design at the University of Lausanne, before moving to Paris in 1881. In Paris, he met artists such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Émile Bernard, and became involved in the artistic avant-garde. Steinlen's early work was influenced by Japanese woodblock prints, and he developed a distinctive style that combined sinuous Art Nouveau lines with bold colors and simplified forms. He often depicted cats, which he saw as symbols of freedom and independence. Steinlen's work was also known for its social commentary. He produced many posters and illustrations that criticized the poverty and exploitation of the working class. He also collaborated with anarchist and socialist publications, and his work was often banned by the French government. Steinlen died in Paris in 1923. His work is now considered to be an important part of the Art Nouveau movement,Théophile Steinlen and his images of cats are still popular today. Steinlen's work is still admired today for its beauty, its social commentary, and its unique style. He was a talented artist who used his art to express his beliefs and to challenge the status quo.
