Description: Oeuvre Poetique (1957) with 8 etchings by Jacques Villon -- signed limited Author: Ganzo, Robert; Jacques Villon, illus Title: Oeuvre Poetique (1957) with 8 etchings by Jacques Villon -- signed limited Publication: Paris: Marcel Sautier, 1957 Edition: First printing Description: Paperback. One of 150 numbered copies on velin pur fil du Marais, signed by Villon and Ganzo. Small quarto (11 x 7.75 inches), stiff wraps with glassine French-folded overlay, housing loose signatures, beautifully printed, with 8 eaux-fortes by Villon, two in colors. Fine copy in slightly used and scuffed paper stiff chemise and matching slipcase that is very good, a bit used. Ganzo was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1898. His family moved to Belgium, where Ganzo displayed precocious talent as a poet and even "performed" some of his poems as a youth to the king of Belgium. He moved to Paris in 1920 and set himself up as a bookseller, publisher and poet. In WWII, Ganzo, a Jew and a communist, became a committed Resistance activist, both as a poet and as a citizen, which led to his arrest by the Gestapo -- luckily one of his guards was a fan of his poems and aided in his escape. In later life he became a historian of ancient Byzantium and Sumer. Jacques Villon was a fine artist, also known as Gaston Duchamp, and was forever in the shadow of his more famous and more talented brother Marcel Duchamp. Fine.
