Description: Lorser Feitelson Signed 1923 Sheet Preliminary Drawings for "Bathers" Painting Lorser Feitelson Signed 1923 Sheet Preliminary Drawings for "Bathers" Painting Click images to enlarge Description Lorser Feitelson, original preliminary drawings for the painting entitled Bathers, signed and dated 1923 in the center of the drawing, about 15 ½ by 10 ½ inches, matted in a 25 ½ by 20 inch frame under glass, in what appears to be excellent condition (the drawing has not been examined out of the frame). According to Internet sources, the page of drawings comes from a sketchbook that Feitelson created in 1923, and other pages of the sketchbook have been offered on the market since 2000. (I have attached several images of the drawing and also an image of the 1923 painting that Heritage Auctions sold for $38,840 in 2011 that I copied from the Internet.) Lorser Feitelson (1898 to 1978) was one of the pioneering modern artists in Los Angeles. He was born in Savannah, Georgia and raised in New York City where he developed a firm foundation in Old Master style draftsmanship. However, in 1913, after viewing the legendary International Exhibition of Modern Art at the Armory, he began to produce a series a formally experimental drawings and paintings based on the controversial work of Henri Matisse, Marcel Duchamp, the Italian futurists. He traveled to and studied in Paris after the end of World War I leading to paintings such as the Bathers in 1923. After returning to the United States, he moved to Los Angeles in 1927 and began working in the Post-Surrealist style that eventually led to his mature abstract work following World War II. Feitelson?s work is currently enjoying a surge in value in the secondary market as seen in recent auction prices recorded in AskArt.com. His work is also in many major museums including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Brooklyn Museum; Whitney Museum; Los Angeles Museum of Art; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; and National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.
