Description: Here is an almost vintage poster of an exhibition of Toulouse Lautrec, Master of The Moulin Rouge featuring the character Jane Avril. It captures the bon vivant spirit of 1890s Paris with its famous dancers of the can-can in the most famous cabaret of its day, The Moulin Rouge. Lautrec was a well-known figure of the Parisian night spot and one of his paintings was displayed near the entrance. He was commissioned by the owner to create a six foot advertisement that launched his poster making career and made him famous overnight. He turned a spotlight on the crowded dance floor of the nightclub culminating in the famous high leg kicks of the can-can dancers. This poster is from a 2002 exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art. It was framed beautifully by a well-known Chapel Hill gallery, the Steinway Gallery which unfortunately is no longer in business. It's a neat piece of art from a long ago era whose "joy of life" we could certainly use a touch of today. Thanks for looking.
