Description: Bold Duchamp London Black Label handmade woven silk tie. No longer available in store. Keep it sharp. Keep it lively. About Duchamp London – Blue Label and early Black Label handmade silk ties: When he was 9 years old Mitchel Jacobs the founder of, and ‘style engineer’ at, Duchamp London, was given his first suit by his grandfather, a tailor in the East End of London. Three years later, his father took him to Jermyn Street in the heart of St James’s, then and now, one of London’s most fashionable districts. Here, according to his November 2014 obituary, he was ‘transfixed by the glorious colours and rich textures’ of the clothing on sale. Inspired by what he saw, from the mid-1960s he worked in London for such icons of fashion as Tommy Nutter (co-founder of Nutters of Saville Row and tailor to the Beatles, Mick Jagger and supervillan the Joker (as played by Jack Nicholson in 1989)), and Jeff Kwintner at his legendary King’s Road store Village Gate. In 1968 he left for the United States of America to help set up a mod-inspired collection in New York. However, it was Mitchel’s discovery in 1987, in a Paris flea market, of a cache of 10,000 vintage cufflinks that ultimately led to the foundation of Duchamp London in 1989. Duchamp London’s first store was located in Ledbury Road in Notting Hill, London, just around the corner from the studio flat where I used to live. It did not take long for me to acquire a serious Duchamp London tie habit. Blue Label ties made before 2006 (only 1,000 were made of each design and colourway), when Mitchel Jacobs sold Duchamp London to the management (and Icelandic investors), and early Black Label ties, made for several years following his departure (under the stewardship of Marc and Alison Psarolis), are, in my opinion, without question, the best luxury silk ties ever made. If this tie is the first Duchamp London tie that you own, it will, almost certainly, be your favourite tie by far. Duchamp London handmade silk ties are currently on sale in Selfridges in London at a cost of £120. About Vanners Silk Weavers: Most Duchamp London Blue Label and early Black Label ties were handmade by Vanners Silk Weavers (some were Made in Italy). The company was established in the 1740s in Spitalfields London, moving to Sudbury in Suffolk in the 1870s (textile manufacturing had been established in Sudbury as early as the 14th century). Such is the quality of the silk textiles produced in Sudbury that it was used to line the robes of Queen Elizabeth II at her coronation in 1953. Vanners went into administration on 9 November 2020, having lost 70 per cent of its business (Vanners’ biggest customer, Brooks Brothers of New York, filed for bankruptcy protection in July 2020); another casualty of the global pandemic.
